SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION

If you loved The Deadly Affair, try these.

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold poster 01

Movie / 1965 / Drama / Thriller

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold

Why this pick

Like Lumet’s adaptation, it treats espionage as weary moral compromise rather than glamour, with a chilly London-and-Berlin mood, procedural patience, and a protagonist forced to mistrust every human connection.

The Ipcress File poster 02

Movie / 1965 / Thriller

The Ipcress File

Why this pick

A superbly drab, paranoid 1960s British spy puzzle: low-key investigation, institutional suspicion, and an unflashy visual world where mundane details carry menace.

The Quiller Memorandum poster 03

Movie / 1966 / Action / Thriller

The Quiller Memorandum

Why this pick

Its solitary agent moves through a cold, opaque Berlin under constant pressure, matching The Deadly Affair’s restrained tension and emphasis on psychological endurance over action spectacle.

The Looking Glass War poster 04

Movie / 1969 / Action / Drama / Thriller

The Looking Glass War

Why this pick

Another John le Carré-derived anti-spy drama, steeped in bureaucratic decay and bleak tradecraft. Its measured pace and tragic view of intelligence work closely suit Lumet’s sombre approach.

The Day of the Jackal poster 05

Movie / 1973 / Action / Thriller

The Day of the Jackal

Why this pick

For the same meticulous, unsensational suspense: a procedural investigation unfolds through patient observation, official rivalries, and accumulating dread rather than flashy set pieces.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

In 1960s London, Charles Dobbs is a staid MI5 operative investigating Foreign and Commonwealth Office official Samuel Fennan, a former Communist who apparently commits suicide. Dobbs becomes suspicious about the cause of Fennan's death while visiting Fennan's widow the morning after his death. When a wake-up call is received at Fennan's home, his widow Elsa says the call was for her. Dobbs discovers this to be a lie, and as a result Dobbs suspects that Elsa, a survivor of a Nazi extermination camp, might have some clues regarding Fennan's death.
