The Novelist's Film

Why this pick

Another Hong Sang-soo study in chance meetings, artistic self-doubt, alcohol-fuelled conversation, and subtly shifting social rhythms; its cool monochrome calm and dry observational humour closely echo the wandering texture of The Day He Arrives.

Right Now, Wrong Then poster 02

Movie / 2015 / Drama

Right Now, Wrong Then

Why this pick

It shares the seemingly casual encounter, awkward flirtation, drinking sessions, and filmmaker milieu, then uses repetition to make tiny changes in speech and perception emotionally revealing.

Hill of Freedom poster 03

Movie / 2014 / Comedy / Drama

Hill of Freedom

Why this pick

A compact, lightly dislocated Seoul wander built from letters, missed connections, cafés, and tentative romance—equally attentive to the comedy and melancholy of people talking past one another.

On the Beach at Night Alone poster 04

Movie / 2017 / Drama

On the Beach at Night Alone

Why this pick

Its unhurried walks and extended drinking-table conversations retain Hong’s spare, intimate style, while giving the loneliness and professional unease beneath casual social exchanges a more exposed emotional weight.

Woman is the Future of Man poster 05

Movie / 2004 / Drama

Woman is the Future of Man

Why this pick

Two old friends revisit a shared past through an ex-lover, with deadpan discomfort, wintry urban wandering, and alcohol loosening the gap between what characters say and what they feel.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

Seong-jun heads to Seoul to meet a close friend who lives in Gahoe-dong (North Village; ), Jongno District. When the friend does not answer his calls, Seong-jun wanders around Bukchon and runs into an actress he used to know. The two talk for a while but soon part. He makes his way down to Insa-dong and drinks makgeolli (rice wine) by himself. Some film students at another table ask him to join them—Seong-jun used to be a film director. He soon gets drunk and heads for his ex-girlfriend's house.
