Why this pick
Like The Cincinnati Kid, it turns a high-stakes game into a bruising character contest, following a gifted young player whose ambition collides with an older master and the moral cost of winning.
Why this pick
A smart, contained poker drama with the same fascination for nerve, reading opponents, and the seductive pull of proving oneself at the table.
Why this pick
Its period-world polish, sly confidence games, and escalating battle of wits echo the pleasurable tension and old-school cool surrounding The Kid’s defining card match.
Why this pick
For the seedier, more freewheeling side of card-playing life: a richly observed gambling world where friendship, obsession, luck, and self-deception matter as much as the hands.
Why this pick
Mamet delivers tightly controlled con-game suspense driven by verbal feints and psychological advantage, ideal if the poker-table bluffing and power shifts were the main attraction.

01 / THE STORY
Eric Stoner, nicknamed "The Kid", is an up-and-coming poker player in New Orleans. He hears that Lancey Howard, a longtime master of the game nicknamed "The Man", is in town, and sees it as his chance to finally become the Man himself. The Kid's friend Shooter cautions him, reminding the Kid how Shooter thought he was the best five-card stud player in the world, until Howard "gutted" him when they played.
