Why this pick
A moving Italian chronicle of two brothers navigating postwar Turin, with the same attentiveness to class, migration, sacrifice, and the difficult love that persists beneath a family’s fractures.
Why this pick
Its blend of private upheaval and modern Italian political disillusionment recalls the way The Best of Youth lets national history press quietly but decisively on everyday relationships.
Why this pick
For the humane, patient observation of a family under strain: it is more contained than The Best of Youth, but shares its emotional honesty and faith in small changes over dramatic certainties.
Why this pick
A gently melancholic, humane character study whose restraint, moral curiosity, and concern for inner lives may appeal if the reflective passages of The Best of Youth were the lasting draw.

01 / THE STORY
''The Best of Youth'' is a family saga set in Italy from 1966 through 2003. It chronicles the life of an Italian family, the Caratis, but focuses primarily on two brothers, Matteo (Alessio Boni) and Nicola (Luigi Lo Cascio), documenting their journey from the prime of their wild youth in the mid-1960s counterculture, to parenting and retirement in the early 2000s. The film aims to show the interaction of the personal and the political, the ways in which small events may become turning points in the important choices made by individuals.
