The Draughtsman's Contract poster 01

Movie / 1982 / Comedy

The Draughtsman's Contract

Why this pick

Greenaway’s earlier film shares the formal compositions, ritualised power games and exacting architectural eye of The Belly of an Architect, unfolding as a coolly comic period puzzle.

The Conformist poster 02

Movie / 1970 / Drama

The Conformist

Why this pick

Its monumental Roman spaces, sculpted light and emotionally repressed protagonist create a similarly sensual, uneasy study of private obsession framed by grand design.

The Last Emperor poster 03

Movie / 1987 / Drama

The Last Emperor

Why this pick

A lavish, contemplative drama in which immense architecture and meticulously arranged colour express a man’s changing sense of identity, isolation and historical scale.

The Decameron poster 04

Movie / 1971 / Drama / Comedy

The Decameron

Why this pick

Pasolini’s earthy Renaissance pageant provides a less austere but related pleasure in art history made tactile: bodies, fresco-like compositions and irreverent encounters staged with visual confidence.

La grande bellezza poster 05

Movie / 2013 / Comedy / Drama

La grande bellezza

Why this pick

Its Rome is a living museum of palaces, monuments and private spectacle; elegant camera movement and melancholy satire echo the architectural grandeur and cultivated unease of Greenaway’s film.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

The American architect Stourley Kracklite has been commissioned to construct an exhibition in Rome dedicated to the architecture of Étienne-Louis Boullée. Doubts arise among his Italian colleagues about the legitimacy of Boullée among the pantheon of famed architects, perhaps because Boullée was an inspiration for Adolf Hitler's architect Albert Speer.
