Why this pick
Like The Bed Sitting Room, it turns a deeply English institutional world into an absurdist nightmare, pairing deadpan social satire with grotesque behaviour and a steadily destabilising reality.
Why this pick
Its episodic, anarchic British satire shares the supplied film’s fondness for surreal non sequiturs, cheerfully broken social rituals, and comedy that becomes unsettling through repetition.
Why this pick
A sprawling, deliberately artificial British satire whose episodic encounters expose institutions as bizarre machines, matching the deadpan, dislocated comic logic of The Bed Sitting Room.
Why this pick
For its mock-documentary catalogue of post-disaster oddity: precise bureaucratic form collides with impossible events, creating the same dry, distinctly British sense that civilisation has gone peculiar.
Why this pick
Buñuel’s immaculate social rituals repeatedly dissolve into absurdity, offering a similarly deadpan, surreal assault on bourgeois normality—less post-apocalyptic, but equally unconcerned with conventional reality.

01 / THE STORY
The film is set in London on the third or fourth anniversary of a Nuclear warfare which lasted two minutes and twenty-eight seconds, including signing the peace treaty. Three (or possibly four) years after the nuclear holocaust, the survivors wander amidst the debris. Penelope is 17 months pregnant and lives with her lover, Alan, and her parents in a London Underground train on the (still functioning) Circle line (London Underground).
