Why this pick
A tense, unusually grounded defense by a small force against vastly greater numbers, built around shifting leadership, exhaustion, and respect for the human cost rather than easy triumph.
Why this pick
Like The Alamo, it finds drama in an isolated garrison under siege, emphasizing tactical decisions, group solidarity, and the sober aftermath of political and military calculation.
Why this pick
Its claustrophobic depiction of soldiers defending an exposed position offers the same mounting inevitability and ensemble courage, with a more immediate, stripped-down combat style.
Why this pick
A sweeping but intimate Civil War drama whose moral seriousness, period texture, and focus on comrades preparing for a near-impossible assault align closely with The Alamo’s elegiac heroism.
Why this pick
For the reflective side of The Alamo: a restrained historical drama about soldiers caught between battlefield realities and national mythmaking, driven by principled performances rather than spectacle.

01 / THE STORY
The film begins in March 1836 in the Mexican State of Coahuila y Tejas town of San Antonio de Bexar (now Downtown San Antonio in the U.S. state of Texas), site of the Alamo, where bodies of Texan defenders and Mexican attackers are strewn over the Alamo. The film then flashes back to a year earlier. Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid) attends a party where he tries to persuade people to migrate to Texas. He meets with David Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton), recently defeated for reelection to Congress. Houston explains to Crockett that as an immigrant to Texas, Crockett will receive [a square mile] of his own choosing. Crockett, with a grin, pointedly asks Houston whether this new republic is going to need a president.
