Why this pick
Like The 8-Year Engagement, it treats a young couple’s commitment with sincerity and uses a heightened premise to explore devotion, memory, and the ache of wanting more time together.
Why this pick
A tender Japanese romance shaped by illness, absence, and family bonds. Its gentle emotional pacing and earnest belief in love’s endurance closely suit the tearful warmth of The 8-Year Engagement.
Why this pick
This is another intimate Kyoto-set love story whose early sweetness gains poignancy through its unusual structure, preserving the same sincere, emotionally escalating romantic pull.
Why this pick
Its reflective storytelling lets first love and grief unfold with restraint rather than melodramatic excess, making it a strong fit for the film’s compassionate, cathartic emotional register.
Why this pick
Less plot-driven but similarly humane, this delicate drama finds quiet hope in caregiving, everyday rituals, and family connection—ideal if the emotional tenderness mattered as much as the romance.

01 / THE STORY
Living in Okayama, Okayama, Hisashi meets Mai for the first time at a restaurant party, but she lets him know she doesn't like his sullen attitude. He apologizes, saying he had been nauseous all day, and Mai, feeling guilty, cheerfully sees him off. The two begin dating and after a few months, the shy Hisashi finally asks for her hand in marriage. She says yes and they go so far as to reserve a place for the ceremony when Mai starts suffering lapses of memory. One day she suddenly experiences an extreme seizure accompanied by hysteria.
