Why this pick
Rossellini again places Ingrid Bergman in an emotionally raw confrontation with postwar Italy, using austere locations and an unvarnished, spiritually searching realism akin to Stromboli.
Why this pick
Its uneasy marriage, volcanic Italian landscape, and patient observation of alienation make this a close companion to Stromboli, with Bergman’s interior turmoil carrying the drama.
Why this pick
A defining work of Rossellini’s severe neorealist style: ruined spaces, moral pressure, and direct emotional force replace conventional melodrama, creating a similarly unforgiving postwar atmosphere.
Why this pick
Made the same year as Stromboli, this spare, elemental portrait shares its spiritual preoccupations, rough natural textures, and faith in faces, landscape, and small gestures over plot.
Why this pick
For another stark island drama, Bergman builds an intense study of isolation and damaged intimacy from barren landscapes, silences, and psychologically exposed performances.

01 / THE STORY
Bergman plays Karin, a displaced Lithuanian people in Italy, who secures release from an internment camp by marrying an Italian ex-POW fisherman, (Mario Vitale), whom she meets in the camp. He promises her a great life in his home island of Stromboli, a volcanic island located between the mainland of Italy and Sicily. She soon discovers that Stromboli is very harsh and barren, not at all what she expected, and the people, very traditional and conservative, show hostility and disdain towards this foreign woman who does not follow their ways.
