Why this pick
Like S.O.B., it turns Hollywood ambition into escalating farce, following a filmmaker whose dreams are mangled by studio machinery and absurd industry personalities.
Why this pick
A sharper, darker companion to S.O.B.'s insider satire: cynical studio politics, ego, pitch culture, and movie-business self-regard are observed with nimble, knowing comedy.
Why this pick
This indie-film counterpart trades studio excess for chaotic production hell, sustaining the same escalating, self-aware comedy about fragile egos and filmmaking continually going off the rails.
Why this pick
Christopher Guest applies a dry, ensemble-driven comic eye to awards-season vanity, finding S.O.B.-adjacent humor in performers and executives losing perspective inside Hollywood hype.
Why this pick
A breezy but barbed Hollywood farce about a studio trying to control its stars and publicity narrative; it matches S.O.B.'s fascination with polished-image chaos behind the scenes.

01 / THE STORY
The story is a satire of the film industry and Hollywood society. The main character, Felix Farmer (Richard Mulligan), is a phenomenally successful film Film producer who has just made the first box office bomb of his career, to the dismay of his movie studio, resulting in the loss of his own sanity. Felix attempts suicide four times: He attempts to die of carbon monoxide poisoning in his car, only to have it slip into gear and drive through the side of his garage, down a sand dune and into the Pacific Ocean. He then attempts to hang himself from a rafter in an upstairs bedroom, only to fall through the floor, landing on a poisonous Hollywood gossip columnist standing in the living room below. Subsequently, he tries to gas himself in his kitchen oven, but is prevented from carrying out his intent by two house guests with other things on their mind.
