SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION

If you loved Session 9, try these.

The Dark and the Wicked poster 01

Movie / 2020 / Horror

The Dark and the Wicked

Why this pick

Its isolated rural setting and restrained sound design cultivate the same slow, oppressive dread as Session 9, with fear emerging through frayed family bonds and an atmosphere that feels poisoned long before anything is explained.

The Machinist poster 02

Movie / 2004 / Drama / Thriller

The Machinist

Why this pick

Brad Anderson again turns an industrial environment into a maze of exhaustion, guilt, and uncertain perception. It shares Session 9’s grimy texture and gradual destabilization, though it plays more as a paranoid psychological thriller.

The Wind poster 03

Movie / 2018 / Fantasy / Thriller / Western

The Wind

Why this pick

Like Session 9, it lets a hostile, isolated location and a deteriorating mind do most of the work. Its tension is spare, ambiguous, and rooted in the unnerving possibility that no one is reliable.

Cure poster 04

Movie / 1997 / Crime / Horror / Mystery

Cure

Why this pick

This methodical, quietly horrifying procedural shares Session 9’s fascination with unseen contagion: dread spreads through conversations, empty spaces, and subtle shifts in behavior rather than conventional shocks.

Noroi: The Curse poster 05

Movie / 2005 / Horror / Thriller

Noroi: The Curse

Why this pick

Its documentary-like investigation patiently assembles a sense of pervasive evil. The payoff is earned through unsettling fragments and escalating implication, much like the recorded sessions and creeping dread in Session 9.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

Gordon Fleming is the owner of a small asbestos removal company. The stresses of work and being a new father are causing problems between him and his wife, Wendy. He is in a desperate financial bind and makes a bid to remove asbestos from the Danvers State Hospital, closed fifteen years ago, within one week. His team consists of Mike, a law school dropout who is knowledgeable about the asylum's history; Phil, who is filled with bitterness after losing his girlfriend and finds solace in smoking marijuana; Hank, who lost his girlfriend as well; and Jeff, Gordon's nephew, who suffers from severe nyctophobia.
