Why this pick
Germi again turns a provincial Italian community into a merciless comic machine, using brisk farce and escalating embarrassment to expose the gap between public virtue and private appetite.
Why this pick
Its polished black comedy shares the same Sicilian milieu, honor-bound absurdity, and sharply controlled satire of institutions that turn desire into social warfare.
Why this pick
A boisterous, bitterly funny attack on machismo and sexual double standards, driven by a hapless protagonist caught in rules that become more ridiculous and cruel by the minute.
Why this pick
It begins with sunlit Sicilian family comedy before revealing the menace beneath ritual, obligation, and masculine pride—a tonal blend of laughter, discomfort, and social critique.
Why this pick
Risi pairs exuberant comic momentum with an increasingly cutting view of Italian masculinity and social performance, balancing broad humor with a darker aftertaste.

01 / THE STORY
The film presents the tale of Agnese Ascalone, daughter of prominent miner Vincenzo Ascalone, and takes place in a small town in Sicily, as did Germi's previous film, ''Divorce, Italian Style''. Agnese is seduced by her sister Matilde's fiancé, and has a tryst with him for which she confesses and tries to repent, only to be discovered by her mother and father. Vincenzo immediately demands that the man, Peppino Califano, marry his daughter, and antics ensue. The film is a dark satire of Sicilian social customs and honor laws, and is very similar to ''Divorce, Italian Style''.
