Why this pick
Like Rouge, it filters old Shanghai through a modern sensibility: exquisitely composed period glamour, a haunted female performer, and a melancholy awareness of how love and image imprison a life.
Why this pick
A lavishly stylised Hong Kong tragic romance, driven by doomed devotion and lyrical theatricality. Its heightened emotions and sense of fate make it a natural companion to Rouge’s spectral love story.
Why this pick
This gothic Chinese melodrama pairs period opulence with an enduring, almost supernatural romance. It shares Rouge’s mournful atmosphere, grand emotional register, and fascination with love surviving time.
Why this pick
For Rouge’s quiet disquiet and elusive emotional afterimage: a measured, visually controlled mystery where longing and uncertainty deepen gradually, and absence becomes more powerful than explanation.
Why this pick
Its restrained yearning, ravishing period textures, and attention to glances, rooms, and missed connection echo Rouge’s elegant melancholy—though its romance is more intimate and earthbound.

01 / THE STORY
Fleur is the blue angel in one of Hong Kong's "flower houses" - bordellos and night clubs of the 1930s. A detached and beautiful performer, she falls in love with Twelfth Master Chan, heir to a chain of pharmacies. They agree to a suicide pact. 50 years later, in modern Hong Kong, Fleur's ghost appears in Yuen's newspaper office, wanting to place an ad to find Chan, who never arrived in the afterlife. Yuen, and his equally bewildered girlfriend, An Chor, are captivated by Fleur and her story.
