Why this pick
Like Rollercoaster, it turns a major public entertainment event into a painstakingly mounted terrorist threat, sustaining 1970s procedural tension as authorities race to identify and stop one determined attacker.
Why this pick
A bomb expert confronts an extortionist’s deadly threat aboard a packed ocean liner. Its ticking-clock investigation, anonymous adversary, and vulnerable crowd closely match Rollercoaster’s suspenseful public-danger setup.
Why this pick
This similarly paced 1970s thriller builds dread around an unseen threat at a huge sporting event, observing both officials and unsuspecting attendees as a public gathering becomes increasingly precarious.
Why this pick
For Rollercoaster’s methodical cat-and-mouse appeal, this follows investigators narrowing in on a meticulous assassin. The cool, detail-driven pacing makes the approaching public danger feel especially unnerving.
Why this pick
It shares Rollercoaster’s anxiety about institutional complacency and a catastrophe hidden behind apparently routine operations, with an escalating investigation rather than action spectacle driving the suspense.

01 / THE STORY
An unnamed man (Timothy Bottoms) (simply called "young man" in the credits) sneaks into Ocean View Amusement Park and places a small radio-controlled bomb on the tracks of the park's wooden roller coaster, The Rocket. The bomb detonates, a coaster train derails, killing and injuring the riders. Safety inspector Harry Calder (George Segal), who initially cleared the ride, is called to the park to investigate. A park worker tells Calder that he saw what he thought was a park maintenance man up on the tracks earlier that day but did not state that the man was someone other than the park had authorized to be there.
