Why this pick
Like Red State, it turns a seemingly reckless visit into an unnerving encounter with a charismatic extremist community, using escalating dread and a blunt, volatile realism.
Why this pick
Its stripped-back American setting, ordinary people pulled into violence, and brutally matter-of-fact consequences echo Red State’s tense, unpredictable moral ugliness.
Why this pick
A grim, escalating thriller that shifts from domestic friction into disturbing cult-adjacent menace, with the same willingness to make violence feel abrupt and destabilising.
Why this pick
It builds comparable unease around a closed gathering, ideological pressure, and the fear that social politeness is concealing something much more dangerous.
Why this pick
For Red State’s isolated-setting anxiety and merciless tension, this offers an equally spare, grounded-feeling siege nightmare driven by helplessness rather than spectacle.
