Why this pick
Like Possession, it turns a collapsing marriage and parental anguish into bodily horror, with an icy, confrontational intensity and emotions made terrifyingly physical.
Why this pick
Its claustrophobic apartment setting, unstable identity, and hostile urban paranoia echo Possession’s sense that domestic space has become a waking nightmare.
Why this pick
For Possession’s cold Berlin-era alienation and espionage-adjacent unease: a sleek corporate nightmare where emotional detachment gradually gives way to disorienting menace.
Why this pick
Its heightened, surreal imagery and poisoned emotional atmosphere offer a similarly feverish experience, where beautiful compositions conceal dread, cruelty, and unbearable family damage.
Why this pick
Claire Denis brings a similarly sensuous, disturbing fusion of desire and violence, privileging physical sensation and fractured intimacy over conventional horror explanation.

01 / THE STORY
Mark is a Intelligence service who returns home to Berlin from a mysterious espionage mission to find that his wife, Anna, wants a divorce. She won't say why, but insists it's not because she's found someone else. Mark reluctantly turns the apartment and custody of their young son, Bob, over to her. After recovering from a destructive bender, he pays a visit to their apartment to find Bob alone, unkempt, and neglected. When Anna returns, he refuses to leave her alone with the child but attempts to make amends. He stays at the apartment to care for Bob but Anna leaves in the middle of the night.
