Why this pick
Like Possessed, it is a sharp Pre-Code portrait of a working-class woman pursuing security and status through desire, with franker cynicism and an equally glamorous urban edge.
Why this pick
Its determined heroine turns limited prospects into a calculated climb through the city, matching Possessed’s class-conscious ambition and unusually candid Pre-Code romantic economy.
Why this pick
This intimate Pre-Code melodrama similarly follows a woman whose encounter with privilege reshapes her life, balancing romantic longing, sacrifice, and social constraint.
Why this pick
A lush, emotionally patient woman’s melodrama about love across a social divide; it shares Possessed’s sympathetic attention to a heroine paying a private price for a better life.
Why this pick
A tough young woman’s attempt to escape her circumstances gives this Pre-Code drama the same mix of romantic vulnerability, economic pressure, and brisk early-sound Hollywood directness.

01 / THE STORY
Marian Martin (Joan Crawford) is a factory girl living with her mother in the working class section of Erie, Pennsylvania. Factory boy Al Manning (Wallace Ford) hopes to marry her, but Marian is determined to find a better life. When a train makes a stop in town, Marian looks through the windows and sees the wealthy passengers. She then makes the acquaintance of one of the train passengers, Wally Stuart (Richard "Skeets" Gallagher), a New York City who gives her champagne and writes down his address, telling her to look him up if she ever makes it to New York. Marian, now tipsy from the champagne, happily returns home. Giggling, she tells Al and her mother that she was drinking down by the railroad tracks.
