Why this pick
Its spare, child-centred storytelling and rural stillness echo Sciamma’s tenderness, allowing small acts of care and unspoken family grief to carry the emotional weight.

A young girl’s imaginative encounter with the adult world unfolds through hushed observation, natural landscapes, and mysterious emotional logic—an essential antecedent to Petite Maman’s quiet wonder.

This gently stylised child’s-eye drama treats loss, parental absence, and new connection with the same direct compassion and emotional clarity that make Petite Maman so affecting.

Eight-year-old Nelly has just lost her beloved grandmother and is helping her parents clean out her mother’s childhood home.
