Why this pick
Shares a distinctly Japanese folklore imagination, filling its historical fantasy world with yōkai and spiritual conflict, but with a more exuberant, family-adventure energy.
Why this pick
Its lavish court setting, talismanic magic, demon investigations, and gradually deepening partnership closely echo the ceremonial supernatural-detective appeal of Onmyoji.
Why this pick
Another ornate screen interpretation of the Onmyoji tradition, centered on a gifted exorcist navigating palace intrigue, spectral threats, and visually elaborate ritual magic.
Why this pick
For the film’s formal beauty and otherworldly unease: this is a ravishing collection of Japanese ghost tales, staged with painterly sets and patient, uncanny dread.

01 / THE STORY
The Heian period was a time when human beings and various Yōkai still coexisted with each other, the latter occasionally causing trouble to humans. Practitioners of the art of ''onmyōdō'', the ''onmyōji'', were held to be able to control and subdue these malevolent entities and other paranormal phenomena, and were thus held in high regard, being employed by the imperial court.
