Why this pick
John Carney again finds intimacy in unfinished songs, chance collaboration, and city streets. Its warm, unvarnished musical encounters carry the same bittersweet belief that making something together can be deeply romantic.
Why this pick
This has Once’s Dublin texture and handmade musical sincerity, with songs becoming a way for young people to imagine a larger life. It is more buoyant, but retains Carney’s tender, lived-in emotional directness.
Why this pick
A delicate, low-budget musical about lonely creative people forming a small artistic refuge. Its stylized Glasgow mood is lighter than Once, yet its songs and tentative connections have a similarly vulnerable charm.
Why this pick
A modest, song-led story in which recording music opens up a close relationship rather than chasing spectacle. Its relaxed pace, affectionate performances, and emphasis on the joy of a newly written song fit Once’s intimate scale.
Why this pick
Another music-rooted Dublin film, driven by rehearsal-room energy and a rough-edged sense of place. It is more raucous and ensemble-focused than Once, but shares its conviction that music can briefly transform ordinary lives.
