The Sacrifice poster 01

Movie / 1986 / Drama

The Sacrifice

Why this pick

Tarkovsky’s final film shares Nostalghia’s rain-soaked spiritual unease, long contemplative takes, and a lonely intellectual confronting faith, rupture, and an impossible private act.

The Turin Horse poster 02

Movie / 2011 / Drama

The Turin Horse

Why this pick

Its elemental black-and-white imagery, severe duration, and repeated domestic ritual extend Nostalghia’s sense of exhausted time, damaged landscapes, and metaphysical solitude.

Silent Light poster 03

Movie / 2007 / Drama

Silent Light

Why this pick

Reygadas uses patient observation, natural sound, and monumental rural images to make spiritual conflict and emotional estrangement feel as tactile as they do in Nostalghia.

Landscape in the Mist poster 04

Movie / 1988 / Drama

Landscape in the Mist

Why this pick

A melancholy journey through fogbound, politically haunted spaces, filmed in graceful long takes with the same dreamlike distance and yearning for an unreachable home.

Mirror poster 05

Movie / 1975 / Drama / History

Mirror

Why this pick

For Nostalghia’s autobiographical ache and poetic imagery, this offers Tarkovsky’s more fragmented meditation on memory, exile, family, and the instability of time.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

The Russian writer Andrei Gorchakov (Oleg Yankovsky) travels to Italy to research the life of 18th-century Russian composer Pavel Sosnovsky, who lived there and committed suicide after his return to Russia. He and his comely interpreter Eugenia travel to a convent in the Tuscany countryside, to look at frescoes by Piero della Francesca. Andrei decides at the last minute that he does not want to enter.
