Why this pick
Like Nobody's Fool, it finds humor, regret, and hard-won tenderness in an aging man's life, using an unhurried small-town rhythm and a deeply humane view of imperfect people.
Why this pick
Its weathered town, barroom intimacy, and affection for people making bad choices give it the same lived-in, bittersweet community feeling beneath the jokes.
Why this pick
A quiet, character-first portrait of unlikely companionship in a small town, with dry humor and emotional warmth that arrives without melodrama.
Why this pick
Another wintry northern working-class drama starring Paul Newman, but more severe: it shares the intimate town texture and damaged masculinity while stripping away much of Sully's buoyancy.
Why this pick
For the appeal of a defensive, wisecracking man slowly confronting family wounds, this pairs sharp adult banter with a generously observed emotional arc.

01 / THE STORY
Donald "Sully" Sullivan is a worn yet spry hustler living in the peaceful, snowy northern New York state village of North Bath. He free-lances in the construction business, usually with his dim-witted friend Rub by his side. He is often at odds with Carl Roebuck, a local contractor, suing him at every opportunity for unpaid wages and disability. Sully's one-legged lawyer Wirf is inept, and his lawsuits are repeatedly dismissed. As a way to irritate him, Sully flirts with Carl's wife Toby openly at every opportunity (which she enjoys). He is a regular at the Iron Horse Saloon, where he often has drinks and plays cards with Wirf, Carl, Rub, and the town sheriff.
