Why this pick
Like Montevideo, God Bless You!, this is an affectionate period sports underdog story, driven by a working-class talent chasing an unlikely place on the world stage.
Why this pick
Its football-centred community spirit, warm humour and rivalry give it a similarly buoyant, people-first feeling rather than treating sport as spectacle alone.
Why this pick
A gentle, nostalgic football drama with an ensemble of dreamers and veterans; it shares the Serbian film’s affection for camaraderie, modest hopes and the game’s social pull.
Why this pick
This period football drama pairs national sporting aspiration with intimate family and class pressures, offering the same earnest emotional sweep and love of football history.
Why this pick
For the vintage football atmosphere: a 1930s club, lovingly observed sporting rituals and a brisk old-fashioned story make it an appealing companion to Montevideo’s period texture.

01 / THE STORY
Belgrade, Serbian and Kingdom of Yugoslavia capital, circa 1930. The story follows eleven passionate, mostly anonymous but very talented soccer players and their journey from the cobblestone streets of impoverished Belgrade neighborhoods to the formation of the national team before the very first FIFA World Cup in faraway Uruguay. So far away that the country's capital, Montevideo, seems more a distant dream than a familiar reality. Named after the city where the inaugural World Cup was held, director Dragan Bjelogrlic's adaptation of journalist Vladimir Stanković's best-selling book centers on the relationship between the two top players: natural talent and poor boy Tirke (Miloš Bikovic) and playboy superstar Moša (Petar Strugar).
