Why this pick
Like MirrorMask, it turns a vulnerable young person’s emotional reality into lavish storybook imagery, with ornate costumes, impossible landscapes, and a melancholy bond beneath the fantasy.
Why this pick
This shares MirrorMask’s perspective of a girl using elaborate fantasy to process frightening adult circumstances; its handmade creatures and unstable dream logic are much darker and stranger.
Why this pick
A similarly tactile, arts-and-crafts fantasy blurs dreams with waking life. Its cardboard inventions and playful visual imagination echo MirrorMask’s handmade, emotionally fragile inner world.
Why this pick
Its lonely young protagonist enters a creature-filled fantasy realm whose fate reflects real emotional pain, delivering the same earnest, visually imaginative escape into a symbolic other world.
Why this pick
It pairs a young heroine’s difficult reality with an intricate mythic underworld, rich practical creature design, and ambiguous dream imagery. Expect a far more severe and adult-toned version of that impulse.
