02
The Trip
Why this pick
Its brittle, endlessly competitive performers and escalating impressions share Mindhorn’s pleasure in watching fragile male egos turn self-mythology into comedy.
03
A Cock and Bull Story
Why this pick
A nimble, knowingly artificial comedy about actors, adaptations and professional vanity; it has the same fondness for ridiculous performance and collapsing boundaries between fiction and life.
04
The Brothers Bloom
Why this pick
For Mindhorn’s heightened retro caper flavour, theatrical identities and playful unreality, this offers a polished, eccentric con-artist adventure with a similarly storybook sensibility.
05
Brigsby Bear
Why this pick
It shares the odd sincerity beneath Mindhorn’s fake cult-media premise, finding warmth and comedy in someone whose identity has been shaped by a beloved fictional world.

01 / THE STORY
A little about the film.
Actor Richard Thorncroft is best known for playing Detective Bruce Mindhorn, a detective with the power to see truth with a cybernetic eye, in the cult 1980s television show ''Mindhorn.'' Twenty-five years later, on the Isle of Man, where ''Mindhorn'' was filmed, police hunt an escaped lunatic, Paul Melly, wanted for murder. Melly says he will only speak to Detective Mindhorn, not realising that Mindhorn is fictional.
