The Mother and the Whore
Why this pick
Like Godard’s portrait of youthful Parisian drift, it turns romantic indecision, sexual politics, and long, searching conversation into an unsparing generational chronicle.

Why this pick
Like Godard’s portrait of youthful Parisian drift, it turns romantic indecision, sexual politics, and long, searching conversation into an unsparing generational chronicle.
Why this pick
Jean-Pierre Léaud again brings a tenderly comic restlessness to a post-1968 Paris of unstable jobs, romantic pursuits, and candid youthful confusion.
Why this pick
Its fractured form and cool pop-modern design extend the playfulness of the French New Wave while treating love and memory with a more melancholy, cerebral pulse.
Why this pick
A loose, witty Left Bank experiment built from female friendship, performance, and games with cinematic form—ideal if Masculin Féminin’s curiosity and spontaneity mattered most.
Why this pick
It shares the alert observation of Parisian social rituals and talk, but channels the era’s alienation into a quieter, more devastating emotional register.

01 / THE STORY
The film stars Jean-Pierre Léaud as Paul, a romantic young idealist and literary lion-wannabe who chases budding pop star Madeleine (Chantal Goya, a real life Yé-yé girl). Despite markedly different musical tastes and political leanings, the two soon become romantically involved and begin a ''ménage à quatre'' with Madeleine's two roommates, Catherine (Catherine-Isabelle Duport) and Elisabeth (Marlène Jobert). The camera probes the young actors in a series of Cinéma vérité interviews about love, lovemaking, and politics.
