Why this pick
Visconti’s grand, painterly study of a ruling class in decline shares Ludwig’s ceremonial splendour, melancholy, and intimate attention to how private longing is crushed by historical change.
Why this pick
Another Visconti aristocratic fresco: sumptuous interiors and ritualised power frame a family’s moral and emotional disintegration with the same operatic severity.
Why this pick
A visually ravishing political tragedy about identity, desire, and complicity; its controlled compositions and doomed protagonist echo Ludwig’s beauty shadowed by isolation.
Why this pick
Visconti pares the action down but retains the exquisite decadence: an artist’s private ideal becomes an all-consuming, melancholy vision amid a fading world.
Why this pick
An intimate life is placed inside monumental pageantry and political upheaval, with opulent imagery and a profound sense of a sovereign becoming a prisoner of his own myth.

01 / THE STORY
Munich, 1864: The 18-year-old, idealistic Ludwig II of Bavaria gets crowned as the Kingdom of Bavaria. His first official act is a lavish support for the inspired but indebted composer Richard Wagner, who settles in Munich after Ludwig's request. Ludwig's cabinet cannot understand his support for the arts and is furious about Wagner's expensive lifestyle. Ludwig tries to find a faithful friend in Wagner, whose music he loves, but these hopes get shattered: Behind the King's back, Wagner has an affair with Cosima Wagner, the wife of Wagner's opportunistic conductor Hans von Bülow. In order to avoid a scandal, Wagner has to leave Munich. Ludwig continues to support Wagner and his projects, but he still feels mistrust against him.
