Mysterious Skin poster 01

Movie / 2004 / Drama

Mysterious Skin

Why this pick

Like L.I.E., it follows damaged adolescent boys negotiating sexuality, friendship and adult exploitation, with an intimate, unsensational emotional directness.

The Mudge Boy poster 02

Movie / 2003 / Drama / Comedy

The Mudge Boy

Why this pick

A similarly quiet coming-of-age drama about grief, masculine isolation and a teenager reaching for connection in a rural world that cannot accommodate him.

Bully poster 03

Movie / 2001 / Crime / Drama

Bully

Why this pick

Its Florida teens share L.I.E.’s unsupervised, morally precarious adolescence and tense peer dynamics, rendered with harsh, immediate realism.

All the Real Girls poster 04

Movie / 2003 / Drama

All the Real Girls

Why this pick

This has the same close, bruised attention to young people discovering desire and vulnerability, though its atmosphere is more tender than criminally charged.

The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things poster 05

Movie / 2004 / Drama

The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things

Why this pick

Its fractured childhood perspective and uncompromising depiction of neglect make it a fitting companion to L.I.E.’s painful view of adults failing a vulnerable boy.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

Howie Blitzer is deeply affected by the death of his mother in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway. His situation is exacerbated by his acrimonious relationship with his distant father Marty, who brought a trophy girlfriend into the house less than a month after his wife's death. Howie's only solace is the company of his best friend Gary, a juvenile delinquent and Male prostitute. Although Gary is attracted to Howie, Howie is unsure of his own sexual orientation. They have two other friends their age, one of whom has an incestuous relationship with his sister. The four boys routinely break into neighborhood houses.
