Why this pick
Kaurismäki reunites the deadpan, extravagantly coiffed band for another deliberately bizarre road odyssey, with the same poker-faced comic rhythm and affectionate outsider spirit.
Why this pick
A black-and-white urban quest from Kaurismäki: its identical-named heroes, blank delivery, absurd obstacles, and stylized cool offer a similarly playful, deadpan Finnish surrealism.
Why this pick
A music-powered, episodic Americana journey whose oddball trio meets a gallery of comic characters; its carefully composed period stylization matches the Cowboys’ playful fish-out-of-water travelogue.
Why this pick
Its cultish deadpan humor, eccentric costumes, shaggy quest structure, and total commitment to a succession of bizarre encounters make it a natural companion in comic absurdity.
Why this pick
Wenders brings an off-kilter outsider community and a melancholy American streetscape to a story shaped by misfits, music, and stylized eccentricity rather than conventional plot momentum.

01 / THE STORY
The Leningrad Cowboys, a band with foot-long quiff hairstyles and long Winklepicker shoes to match, are seeking success in Siberia, but nobody seems to like their music, except for the mute village idiot, Igor (Kari Väänänen). Thwarted by a lack of local commercial potential, they are encouraged to move to United States, for people will "buy anything" there. They depart for New York City, bringing with them a band member who had frozen the previous night while practicing outside.
