Its patient, tactile filmmaking and isolated coastal setting give a forbidden attachment the same sense of awakening, observation and emotional gravity as Ferran’s Lady Chatterley.
Why this pick
A sensuous period romance in which landscape, silence and physical desire carry as much force as dialogue, with a similarly uncompromising attention to a woman’s inner life.
Why this pick
For another French, adult-minded account of desire crossing social boundaries, rendered with intense romantic feeling and a keen awareness of class and confinement.
Why this pick
Its frank, novelistic attention to intimacy, desire and emotional uncertainty suits viewers drawn to Lady Chatterley’s mature, unhurried exploration of relationships.
Why this pick
Its elegant monochrome images and compressed storytelling turn an impossible attraction into a deeply felt study of longing, separation and the pressures surrounding private desire.

01 / THE STORY
In an English country house, Sir Clifford Chatterley lives with his wife Constance. Severely wounded in World War I, he is paralysed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair. Constance tries to be a good wife, but he is distant and her life is empty. One day the maid is ill and Constance goes to see Parkin, the gamekeeper, about some pheasants for the table. Approaching the hut in the woods where he works, she sees him stripped to the waist and washing himself; the sight perturbs her.
