Why this pick
Polanski again turns an isolated location and a small, shifting group into a cruel chamber piece, with humiliating games, unstable alliances, and mounting unease.
Why this pick
Its elegant confinement and exquisitely calibrated power struggle echo Knife in the Water’s fascination with class, masculinity, and control passing silently between people.
Why this pick
A sunlit holiday setting becomes a pressure cooker as jealousy and sexual rivalry sharpen among a small group, sustaining the same cool, watchful tension.
Why this pick
Another taut Polanski three-hander: a remote setting, competing versions of truth, and relentless psychological maneuvering create a similarly stripped-down sense of menace.
Why this pick
Its central triangle develops through glances, status friction, and unnerving ambiguity rather than easy answers, rewarding patience with a steadily tightening atmosphere.

01 / THE STORY
Andrzej (Leon Niemczyk) and Krystyna (Jolanta Umecka) are driving in their Peugeot 403 to a lake to go sailing when they come upon a young man (Zygmunt Malanowicz) hitchhiking in the middle of the road. After nearly hitting him, Andrzej invites the young man along. When they arrive at the lake, instead of leaving the young man behind, Andrzej invites him to go sailing with them. The young man accepts the offer, and, not knowing much about sailing, must learn many hard lessons from Andrzej.
