Why this pick
A lush Joseon court tragedy from the director of King and the Clown, driven by performance, coercive royal power, and an anguished relationship trapped beneath ritual and spectacle.
Why this pick
Its historical palace setting similarly turns beauty and performance into peril, following desire and loyalty as they become dangerously entangled with a volatile ruler.
Why this pick
A court performer is drawn into royal identity and danger in this richly staged Joseon drama, balancing theatricality, political threat, and the human cost of serving a king.
Why this pick
For the tactile costumes and artistic rivalry of King and the Clown, this palace drama finds high emotional stakes in craft, self-expression, and courtly jealousy.
Why this pick
Its exquisitely composed period world and shifting bonds of power echo the earlier film’s mix of beauty, vulnerability, erotic charge, and suspenseful resistance to oppressive authority.

01 / THE STORY
Set in the late 15th century during the reign of Yeonsangun of Joseon, two male street clowns and tightrope walkers, Jangsaeng (Kam Woo-sung) and Gong-gil (Lee Joon-gi), are part of an entertainer troupe. The effeminate and beautiful Gong-gil specializes in female roles ; their manager prostitutes him to rich customers, and Jangsaeng is sickened by this practice. After Gong-gil kills the manager in defense of Jangsaeng, the pair flee to Seoul, where they form a new group with three other street performers.
