Why this pick
Its working-class characters face a life-altering crisis with the same direct, emotionally bruising realism and concern for how external forces strain intimate relationships.
Why this pick
For its doomed-yet-devoted criminal friendship and a protagonist trying to leave the underworld, rendered with a more stylized but equally melancholy sense of loyalty.
Why this pick
A hard-edged yakuza thriller driven by fraught male alliances, escalating violence, and people attempting to hold onto a code within a brutal criminal world.
Why this pick
It trades crime for family drama, but shares the film’s restrained naturalism and painful attention to men whose choices quietly damage the people closest to them.
Why this pick
A much more stylized descent into Japanese criminality, but its relentless momentum, moral grime, and volatile masculinity should suit Ken to Kazu’s bleak intensity.
