The Secrets

Why this pick

It similarly examines women negotiating an Orthodox Jewish world, balancing spiritual intensity, forbidden longing, and compassionate observation rather than easy condemnation.

Fill the Void

Why this pick

Its hushed, visually precise portrait of a Haredi family shares Kadosh’s focus on marriage, duty, and female interiority, though its mood is more delicate than bleak.

A Separation

Why this pick

Its morally complex domestic conflict and close attention to faith, class, and gender pressure offer the same grave, human-scale intensity as Kadosh without simplifying anyone’s motives.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

''Kadosh'' is a bleak drama on the status of women in Haredi society. In the opening scene, Meir (Yoram Hattab), a young Talmudic scholar, thanks God in his morning prayers for not being born a woman. At first, the marriage of Meir and his wife, Rivka (Yael Abecassis), appears tender and idyllic, but as the day progresses, it becomes clear that Meir is obsessed with the fact that he is childless after ten years of marriage. Rivka's younger sister, Malka, marries Yosef in a match arranged by their parents, but loves Yaakov, a rock singer, who has abandoned the religious community.
