Why this pick
Alonso returns to the enigmatic, patient drift and elemental landscapes that make Jauja feel like a fable. Its fractured journey across time is similarly sparse, haunting and resistant to easy explanation.
Why this pick
Its colonial frontier becomes an oppressive psychological wilderness, with deadpan absurdity, disorienting sound design and a protagonist gradually untethered from certainty.
Why this pick
For Jauja's austere landscapes and existential mood, this offers another hypnotically slow, visually exacting descent into isolation, repetition and an encroaching sense of doom.
Why this pick
This Patagonian anti-western shares Jauja's striking widescreen landscapes and colonial unease, but channels them into a colder, more openly brutal reckoning with frontier mythmaking.
Why this pick
Its black-and-white frontier odyssey has the same dreamlike detachment and darkly comic strangeness, following a man through a landscape that grows increasingly mythic.

01 / THE STORY
In the 1880s, Danish Captain Gunnar Dinesen (Viggo Mortensen) is in Argentina with his teenage daughter Ingeborg (Viilbjørk Malling Agger) who asks him if she can have a dog--one that will follow her wherever she goes. Dinesen is propositioned by the rutting Lieutenant Pittaluga (Adrián Fondari) who asks him for permission to take Inge to a dance in exchange for one of his horses. In clumsy Spanish Dinesen refuses, stating that Inge is his daughter. When Dinesen warns Inge that Pittaluga is too fond of young girls and she should not go near him, she asks why she ever would.
