Accattone poster 01

Movie / 1961 / Drama

Accattone

Why this pick

Pasolini shares Fellini’s attention to Rome’s margins, following a shabby hustler through sun-bleached streets with raw social observation, grotesque humor, and an increasingly painful moral weight.

The Roof poster 02

Movie / 1956 / Drama

The Roof

Why this pick

Its peripheral-Rome setting and compassionate focus on people excluded from prosperity echo Il Bidone’s social conscience, replacing the scams with a quietly urgent struggle for dignity and shelter.

Nights of Cabiria poster 03

Movie / 1957 / Drama

Nights of Cabiria

Why this pick

Another Fellini portrait of a vulnerable Roman outsider, it combines comic encounters, nocturnal urban lyricism, and hard-won emotional force while retaining the tender, unsentimental gaze of Il Bidone.

Bob le Flambeur poster 04

Movie / 1956 / Action / Crime / Drama

Bob le Flambeur

Why this pick

This portrait of an aging gambler and small-time criminal has Il Bidone’s fascination with ritualized scams, shabby glamour, and an old rogue whose cool professional facade cannot erase melancholy.

Big Deal on Madonna Street poster 05

Movie / 1958 / Comedy / Crime

Big Deal on Madonna Street

Why this pick

It turns a band of inept Roman crooks into a warmer comic ensemble, but preserves the mixture of postwar poverty, improvised criminal schemes, and vivid street-level character detail.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

In the country outside Rome, a group of swindlers dress up as clerics and con poor farmers out of their savings. Another scam in a shanty town is to pretend they are officials taking deposits for apartments. The proceeds are spent on flashy cars, champagne and prostitutes.
