Why this pick
Its restrained, near-documentary style and quietly devastating focus on a middle-aged man navigating bureaucratic and workplace indignity closely echo Daniel Blake’s dignity-under-pressure.
Why this pick
A compassionate community drama about hardship, resentment and solidarity in a struggling English town, carrying the same moral urgency and faith in ordinary people’s resilience.
Why this pick
Though warmer and more comic, it shares a northern English working-class setting, economic vulnerability and profound affection for people improvising solidarity when stable work disappears.
Why this pick
Another direct, socially committed Loach drama, centered on low-paid workers discovering collective power; it balances anger at exploitation with the warmth of friendships and mutual support.

01 / THE STORY
Widower Daniel Blake, a 59-year-old joiner from Newcastle upon Tyne, has had a heart attack. Though his Cardiology has not allowed him to return to work, Daniel is deemed fit to do so after a Work Capability Assessment and denied Employment and Support Allowance. He is frustrated to learn that his doctor was not contacted about the decision, and applies for an appeal, a process he finds difficult because he must complete forms online and is not Computer literacy.
