Why this pick
Like Home Room, it observes the aftermath and atmosphere of school violence with an unnervingly restrained, intimate approach, prioritising alienation and fractured perspective over easy explanation.
Why this pick
Its austere black-and-white style and shifting viewpoints make this a grave, controlled examination of gendered violence and trauma rather than a conventional thriller.
Why this pick
It shares Home Room’s refusal of sensationalism, concentrating instead on the painful moral and emotional aftermath of a school shooting through intense conversations.
Why this pick
For Home Room’s interest in culpability and the perpetrator’s family, this offers a visually precise, psychologically unsettling study of a mother living with an unthinkable act’s aftermath.
Why this pick
A reflective, female-centred drama about memory, survivorhood, and a school shooting’s long shadow, told with a similarly somber and psychologically uncertain tone.

01 / THE STORY
A school massacre leaves seven students and the shooters parents dead and one student named Deanna Cartwright (Christensen) seriously injured. The shooter himself is dead, shot by police during the confrontation after the actual shooting, and the only witness (and possible suspect) is Alicia Browning (Philipps), a goth subculture student who is now under the attention of the detective in charge of the case, Det. Martin Van Zandt (Garber).
