Why this pick
Like Green for Danger, it makes a handsome wartime English country setting feel quietly sealed-off and menacing, balancing a sophisticated investigation with dry wit and a steadily tightening sense of dread.
Why this pick
A postwar British murder puzzle with an inward, unsettled atmosphere: its patient accumulation of clues and suspicion recalls the controlled tension beneath Green for Danger’s polished surface.
Why this pick
This elegant British thriller shares the deceptive calm, layered observation and moral ambiguity of Green for Danger, turning a confined household and a murder inquiry into meticulous, nerve-racking suspense.
Why this pick
Its mystery is social rather than homicidal, but Alec Guinness and the sharply English mixture of eccentricity, satire and mounting jeopardy make it a fine follow-up to Green for Danger’s wry tonal poise.
Why this pick
Alastair Sim again brings precise comic timing to a distinctly British blend of murder, danger and absurdity. It is broader and more playful, yet retains the pleasure of watching a crisis unfold through eccentric characters.

01 / THE STORY
In August 1944, during the V-1 flying bomb offensive on London, patient Joseph Higgins (Marriott) dies on the operating table in a rural British hospital somewhere in the southeast of England. The anaesthetist, Barney Barnes (Howard), has had a patient die in similar circumstances previously, and when Sister Bates (Campbell) is killed after revealing that the death of Higgins was not an accident, Inspector Cockrill (Sim) is asked to investigate. Cockrill's investigation is hampered by the conflict between Barnes and Mr. Eden (Genn) because of their competition for the affections of nurse Freddi (Gray). After a murder attempt is directed at Freddi, the inspector re-stages the operation in order to unmask the murderer.
