Why this pick
Its stark, fatalistic samurai world and icy visual precision echo Goyokin’s moral darkness, while Tatsuya Nakadai anchors a more psychologically brutal examination of violence.
Why this pick
A controlled, escalating revenge drama with the same outrage at feudal cruelty and institutional hypocrisy, built through tense revelations rather than nonstop swordplay.
Why this pick
Shares Goyokin’s grave pacing, elegant widescreen intensity, and a principled warrior pushed into defiance by a corrupt lord’s abuse of power.
Why this pick
Kihachi Okamoto pairs sharp action with mordant humour and anger toward feudal authority; its uneasy camaraderie and sudden brutality suit Goyokin’s revisionist samurai edge.
Why this pick
For its lean, atmospheric craftsmanship and a quiet outsider confronting exploitation. The film gives swordplay real dramatic weight rather than treating it as spectacle alone.

01 / THE STORY
Magobei Wakizaka is a samurai for the Sabai clan. A nearby island, Sado, Niigata, boasts a rich gold mine which provides plentiful riches for the Tokugawa clan. When one of the gold ships sink, the local fishermen recover some of the gold, intending to return it to the Tokugawa clan. However, Magobei's clan master, Rokugo Tatewaki, takes the gold and slaughters the fishermen so they cannot report the gold stolen. Magobei is appalled. He promises not to report Rokugo to the Tokugawa shogunate in exchange for Rokugo's promise to never do so again.
