Why this pick
It builds on Guardian of the Universe with even more forceful military-scale spectacle, tactile city destruction, and a serious disaster-film mood around an escalating alien-kaiju threat.
Why this pick
The trilogy’s darkest chapter retains the mythic monster imagery and grounded human stakes, while pushing its apocalyptic atmosphere and emotional weight further.
Why this pick
From the same director, this delivers similarly grave, sharply staged kaiju action: ancient forces awaken, institutions scramble, and giant-monster scenes feel like a national catastrophe.
Why this pick
A focused, earnest reboot with a strong human and military response to Godzilla, balancing practical-effects combat with the melancholy, high-stakes tone of 1990s Gamera.
Why this pick
Its sober defense-force perspective, carefully mounted miniature spectacle, and reverence for giant creatures make it a natural companion to Gamera’s modern mythmaking.

01 / THE STORY
A ship carrying plutonium collides with a floating atoll off the eastern coast of the Philippines, one of many incidents occurring throughout the area. As the anomalous formation approaches Japan, a team of scientists led by Naoya Kusanagi (Akira Onodera) discovers orihalcum amulets and a stone slab covered in Etruscan alphabet on the atoll. During the investigation, the atoll suddenly quakes, destroying the slab and throwing the scientists into the ocean. One member of the team, Marine Officer Yoshinari Yonemori (Tsuyoshi Ihara), sees the eye and tusk of a giant turtle.
