Why this pick
A lush, emotionally volatile study of a domineering father and the damage he leaves behind, with the same mid-century scale, troubled privilege, and wounded masculinity.

Its glossy corporate world conceals lonely, pressured lives and compromised romantic hopes, matching the sophisticated surface and disillusioned adult melodrama of From the Terrace.
Why this pick
Another expansive, star-driven chronicle of wealth, ruthless business ambition, and destructive family legacy, delivered with unapologetically heightened mid-century melodramatic force.

A returning veteran confronts a home town full of class resentment, fraught relatives, and impossible attachments; it shares the restless postwar emotional ache beneath an elegant studio sheen.

01 / THE STORY
In 1946, David Alfred Eaton (Paul Newman) returns home from the war to Philadelphia. He finds his mother Martha (Myrna Loy) driven to alcoholism by years of neglect and abuse from her husband Samuel Eaton (Leon Ames (actor)), owner of a prestigious iron and steel company. Having withdrawn from his family after the death of his firstborn son thirteen years earlier, Samuel's resentment drove Alfred to turn his back on the family business and strike out on his own with Lex Porter (George Grizzard), his closest friend.
