Why this pick
Like Friday Night Lights, it makes sport a crucible for community pressure, bruised masculinity, and hard-won connection, with an unvarnished, emotionally direct small-town feel.
Why this pick
Its high-school football story shares the sense that a single season carries the weight of an entire working-class town, while keeping the focus on restless young people under scrutiny.
Why this pick
Another Texas football pressure cooker, but one centered on players pushing back against a culture that treats them as local property; it has the same charged locker-room and Friday-night atmosphere.

This patient documentary shares the film's investment in how adolescent athletes, families, schools, and hometown expectations become inseparable from the game.
Why this pick
It expands the movie's compassionate, grounded portrait of football, family strain, and a Texas town whose ambitions and anxieties play out under stadium lights.

01 / THE STORY
As preseason practice begins for the Permian High School football team in August 1988, the town of Odessa, Texas has high expectations for the players and their coach Gary Gaines to win a state championship with their star running back Boobie Miles. The quarterback, Mike Winchell, runs under the expectation of handing off the ball to Miles on most plays. Fullback (gridiron football) Don Billingsley struggles with his ball handling and is abused by his alcoholic father Charles, who won a state championship with Permian. The players frequently party as they deal with the pressures of Odessa's expectations.
