Why this pick
Its calm, scientifically minded multinational crew and sleek mid-century production design echo the earnest, collective spirit of First Spaceship on Venus, while building cosmic unease through discovery rather than action.
Why this pick
Another distinctive East German vision of spaceflight: patient, idealistic scientists confront a baffling celestial signal amid austere futurist imagery and a reflective, quietly mysterious tone.
Why this pick
This Soviet planetary expedition shares the earlier film’s practical-effects wonder, international-team sensibility, and sincere fascination with confronting the unknown through engineering and exploration.
Why this pick
For its restrained Eastern Bloc futurism and methodical space-professional atmosphere, this is a compelling match; its tension grows from human judgment and a technical mission rather than spectacle.
Why this pick
A close tonal cousin from DEFA, pairing a serious scientific mission with colorful retro-futurist design, group dynamics, and an alien-world mystery approached with wide-eyed conviction.

01 / THE STORY
In 1985 engineers involved in an industrial project to irrigate the Gobi Desert accidentally unearth a mysterious and apparently artificial "spool". When found to be made of a material unknown on Earth, the spool is circumstantially linked to the Tunguska event of 1908. The spool is seized on as evidence that the explosion, originally blamed on a meteor, was actually caused by an alien spaceship.
