Why this pick
A pristine, sealed-off medical world turns bodily restoration into obsessive captivity, matching Franju’s clinical beauty, moral chill, and sympathy for a woman made into an object.
Why this pick
Its disfigured protagonist, artificial identity, and stark modernist imagery echo the original’s fixation on faces, alienation, and the frightening distance between inner self and outward appearance.
Why this pick
Hammer’s lush colour Gothic reframes disfigurement, longing, and surgical obsession with melodramatic dread; it shares Franju’s sympathy for the concealed, wounded figure beneath the horror.
Why this pick
A decaying mansion, medical authority, and necrophilic repression create a similarly elegant, taboo-charged Gothic nightmare, paced more like a poisoned fairy tale than a conventional shocker.
Why this pick
Its unnervingly polite captor and imprisoned young woman sustain the same calm, airless cruelty as Franju, with horror arising from control, isolation, and warped devotion rather than spectacle.

01 / THE STORY
At night just outside Paris, a woman drives along a riverbank and dumps a corpse in the river. After the body is recovered, Dr. Génessier identifies the remains as those of his missing daughter, Christiane Génessier, whose face was horribly disfigured in an automobile accident that occurred before her disappearance, for which he was responsible. Dr. Génessier lives in a large mansion, which is adjacent to his clinic, with numerous caged German Shepherds and other large dogs.
