Why this pick
The more intimate, politically charged first chapter of Elizabeth I’s rise: the same lavish Tudor imagery, court intrigue, religious danger, and Cate Blanchett’s commanding yet vulnerable monarch.
Why this pick
A visually rich counterpart built around female sovereignty, hostile court factions, and the pressure of inherited power, with a stately but emotionally direct historical-drama style.
Why this pick
Offers similarly sumptuous royal-pageant visuals and a young queen learning to command a male political world, while giving the romance a warmer, more intimate weight.
Why this pick
For the pleasure of palace power games and formidable women at the centre of the state, though its tone is sharper, stranger, and more darkly comic than Elizabeth’s grandeur.
Why this pick
Its measured Tudor court tension, moral stakes, and elegant period craft make it a strong match for the political and religious peril beneath Elizabeth’s ceremonial splendor.

In 1585, Catholic Spain, ruled by King Philip II of Spain, is the most powerful country in the world. Seeing Protestant England as a threat, and in retaliation for English piracy of Spanish ships, Philip plots to take over England and make his daughter, Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain, the Queen of England in Elizabeth's place. Meanwhile, Elizabeth I of England is pressured by her advisor, Francis Walsingham, to marry - if she dies without an heir, the throne will pass to her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots, who is Catholic.
