Why this pick
Like East Is East, it finds warmth and sharp comedy in a British South Asian family negotiating tradition, generational pressure and self-determination, while keeping the emotional stakes buoyant and affectionate.
Why this pick
A prickly, energetic portrait of Pakistani-British life, class and family obligation, with the same willingness to let comedy, tenderness and conflict coexist without easy answers.
Why this pick
It similarly uses an interracial relationship and close-knit immigrant family to generate awkward, character-based comedy, while treating parental expectations and personal independence with real feeling.
Why this pick
Set in 1980s Britain, it shares East Is East’s affectionate but clear-eyed view of a Pakistani-British teenager pushing against a strict father and finding a voice of his own.
Why this pick
Mira Nair brings warmth, humour and emotional complexity to an immigrant family caught between inherited values and their children’s choices, with an equally vivid sense of community.
