Why this pick
A bracing predecessor to Days of Wine and Roses: intimate, unsentimental alcoholism drama, driven by a gifted performer and the frightening gap between everyday charm and compulsive self-destruction.
Why this pick
Like Days of Wine and Roses, it observes a romance being steadily reshaped by addiction, with raw New York naturalism, emotional volatility, and no easy moral distance from its damaged couple.
Why this pick
Its recovery-focused perspective shares Blake Edwards's interest in denial, accountability, and the painful work beneath a polished professional façade; Michael Keaton gives it urgency without sentimentality.
Why this pick
For the same blend of mid-century sophistication and deep sadness: Jack Lemmon turns a seemingly light office-world story into a compassionate portrait of loneliness, compromise, and emotional rescue.
Why this pick
A serious, actor-led study of mental illness and difficult treatment, it carries a similarly direct emotional intensity and respect for the slow, uncertain process of confronting self-destructive patterns.
