Why this pick
A sharply plotted family-inheritance whodunit with an eccentric household, shifting suspicions, and a polished old-fashioned mystery feel that echoes Crooked House’s poisonous domestic atmosphere.
Why this pick
Its grand country estate, crowded web of relatives and servants, and patient accumulation of class tensions make the investigation feel as much about a family’s secrets as the crime.
Why this pick
A stylishly artificial locked-house mystery in which a death leaves a volatile, secretive family circle turning on one another; lighter and more theatrical, but similarly devious.
Why this pick
A clever, character-led puzzle where wealthy friends are gathered into a controlled setting and every conversation seems to conceal an old grievance or dangerous piece of information.
Why this pick
For Crooked House’s pleasure in elaborate misdirection and refined menace: a confined English manor setting hosts an increasingly intricate battle of intellects and identities.

01 / THE STORY
The granddaughter of late Greeks-British business tycoon Aristide Leonides, Sophia Leonides, visits private investigator Charles Hayward in his office. Sophia wants Charles to investigate Aristide's death, for she believes he was murdered by a member of his sprawling and idiosyncratic family. Sophia notes that Aristide' regular insulin injection had been laced with Physostigmine from his eye drops, causing a fatal heart attack. Sophia believes this was deliberate, not accidental. Charles reluctantly takes on the case, in part because he had a brief love affair with Sophia in Cairo. Charles seeks the consent of Chief Inspector Taverner of Scotland Yard to look into the case, utilising his personal connection with Taverner, who had served with Charles's father, a decorated former Assistant Commissioner who was murdered.
