Why this pick
This similarly grave British disaster film pairs nuclear-triggered planetary danger with an unusually sober, human-scale view of the scientists, officials, and public facing an irreversible threat.
Why this pick
Its measured scientific teamwork and world-endangering celestial event echo the serious, collaborative problem-solving spirit beneath Crack in the World's large-scale destruction.
Why this pick
For the tension between expert warning and institutional hesitation, this delivers a grounded volcanic disaster story driven by escalating geological evidence and desperate evacuation choices.
Why this pick
Its Cold War-era scientific procedural tone, expeditionary settings, and matter-of-fact faith in experts make it a fitting companion to Crack in the World's vintage disaster sensibility.

01 / THE STORY
An international consortium of scientists, operating as Project Inner Space in Tanganyika, Africa, is trying to tap into the Earth's Geothermal power energy by drilling a very deep hole down to the Earth's Core. The scientists are foiled by an extremely dense layer of material. To penetrate the barrier and reach the magma below, they intend to detonate an Nuclear weapon at the bottom of the hole.
